The Refining Years - 1961 to 1974 |

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove wha is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Romans 12:1 The church called Brother Calvin Stephens
as pastor in 1961. Brother Stephens,
an outspoken and strong-minded policeman, came to the pulpit with
a zeal to serve the Lord. Like Brother Hamilton, he had no formal training,
but
believed and taught the
Bible. His wife, Reba,
an outgoing and friendly person, took an active role in the church
ministries.
Brother Gearld Goddard came to Sherwood as music director in 1964 and has ministered to the church with his musical talent since that time. His wife, Dolores, was a wonderful musician as well as a dedicated Christian lady. She played the piano for the church services until her death in 1993. In 1969, the church called Paul Brown as youth director and later that year, after his ordination, he officially became the associate pastor. By that time Brother Stephens was suffering from ill health and Brother Brown took on many of the church responsibilities. Brother Stephens' ministry had a refining influence on the church. His uncompromising stand on his beliefs and his conviction that the church should pull out of the Southern Baptist Convention brought about a rift in the congregation. Many left during this time. While the church was significantly smaller in size, those who remained were loyal to the pastor and dedicated to obeying the Lord, no matter what. The church voted to start a Christian school in 1972. To accommodate the students, the church rebuilt the educational building over the basement. A year later, they added an L-shaped addition around that building make the current educational building.
For the first year Reba Stephens served as principal of Sherwood Baptist Academy and many of the church members taught classes. One of the volunteer teachers was a young education major from Oklahoma Baptist University named Susan Boyd. She commuted to the school from Shawnee every day with Paul Brown, who was also a student at OBU. Brother Brown didn't have time for dating, but the daily trip gave the two an opportunity to become acquainted. Brother Brown and Susan were married in June of 1973, and both taught in the school that fall. The church called Brother Marvin Reynolds as principal of the school that year. He served in that capacity for many years. In 1974, Brother Stephens, like Brother Hamilton, retired with heart
trouble after 13 years in the ministry at Sherwood Baptist Church. The
church voted unanimously to call Paul Brown as the new pastor. |
